A Gift Annuity for the Lord's World

Education has been a passion for Ethel throughout her life. Born into a Seventh-day Adventist home, at the age of nine she expressed her desire to be baptized. Conference President Elder Taylor quizzed her and was satisfied even though of her young age she was baptized. Her childhood home which was supported by the planting of peanuts, sweet potatoes and watermelons, which taught her the value of hard work on the farm.

Ethel began her education in a one teacher school in Elgin, Texas where she attended all 8 grades. One notable teacher was a colporteur who because of his health he had to take a nap in the middle of the school day. He instructed the class just before his mid day nap, "Go over your lessons four times while I sleep." Even though there were saw horses for desks and no library that didn't necessarily mean a second rate education. After the ABC's were learned, there was Bible memorization. Even though Ethel is over 100 years old, she can still recite those Bible verses learned in that one-room school.

After graduating from Southwestern Academy and she then completed the Academic Normal course in 3? years. "By attending a one-room church school, I was able to learn the theory of teaching through observation," Ethyl says with a twinkle in her eye. "I returned to that same one room school at Elgin, and had the opportunity to teach my two sisters, Alta in 5th grade and Nellie in 8th grade. They in turn helped me teach reading and the ABC's to the younger children. And the pay - well, $35 per month, and even then with the low pay the school ran out of money and the board came to me and said, 'We don't have any money left to pay you, so you will have to quit." I didn't quit, I just volunteered my services for the last month of school." After a year at Union College Ethel responded to an emergency to fill the need for the cafeteria manager (Matron) at Oak Park Academy and also found a husband Rollin Jenkins . Rollin and Ethyl then returned to Elgin again, and he taught the upper grades and she taught the lower grades for four years together. After 2 years at Jefferson, TX they again returned to Elgin TX for another two years.

Responding to a call to pastoral ministry they were at many churches - Lewing, TX Tyler, TX Forth Worth, TX and then to the Texico Union. Ethel was called upon to be the Classroom Supervisor for the Texico Union. When Rollin retired, Ethel continued to utilize her skills at Livermore, California School and taught for five years, finally retiring in 1970.

"When my husband and I made out our will, we decided to give ? of our estate to our children and ? to the Lord's Work," states Ethel. "I was later married again, and after my second husband passed away, I wanted to make a gift of the same amount to the Lord's work as my first husband and I had agreed on. When I heard about a Charitable Gift Annuity, I thought it was a good idea to receive a life income from that gift that we had set aside so many years before."

"We have always been interested in helping the Lord's work. The only reason I want to continue living this long is to be a blessing," states Ethyl.
